IELTS Listening: Numbers in the news

Welcome to this post on IELTS Listening: Numbers in the news. In this post, you will hear a short report on the UK’s new coronavirus measures. There are lots of numbers, and you will need to write them down quickly to get all of them. Use a pen and paper, as you will need to make notes!

Task

Read the following script about the UK’s new rules. Predict likely answers (1 and 2 are not numbers!). Once you have read through the script, play the video below and listen closely for the answers.

Script

The government has unveiled tough new quarantine rules for anyone arriving in (1)__________ from outside the UK, including fines and the threat of jail for people who flout the rules. The measures are designed to keep coronavirus variants out of the country.

All travellers are already required to have a negative COVID test before they arrive. From (2)__________, all passengers will have to self-isolate for (3)__________ days and be tested on day (4) )__________ and day (5)__________. Those arriving from the (6)__________ countries on the government’s red list will be taken to a hotel where they have to stay for (7)__________ days at a cost of (8)£__________, and if people violate the rules, they could face large fines, and potentially up to (9)__________ years in prison. Scotland has gone (10)__________ step further and confirmed that anyone returning from abroad will have to enter a quarantine hotel. Here’s our transport correspondent, Caroline Davis.

Now, listen again. Find any answers that you missed. If you got all of the answers right, pay attention to the speaker’s intonation (the way the voice goes up and down) and how she groups words together as you read along with her. Remember, if you want to practice your British accent, you can also listen and repeat what the speaker is saying, and record yourself to compare!
