  3. Do you read broadsheet or tabloid newspapers?

Answers

I don’t spend that much time reading newspapers, but I do like to read magazines. I buy magazines a couple of times a month, usually related to fashion and other articles on make-up and health. I like to keep up to date with the latest fashions and they are always lots of write ups on different products,

I don’t buy newspapers, but I do read newspapers online. I like to keep up to speed on what is happening in the world. I choose good quality news sources such as the Guardian as I can’t stand tabloid newspapers. The tabloids don’t really report real news, mostly the articles are just about famous people and what was on tv the night before.

Have a look at these questions –

  2. Do you like to read about what is happening in the world around you?
  3. Are you only interested in local news?

Answers

I am mostly interested in global news as I think it is important to know what is happening outside my own country. I think it is important to keep up to date with current events and as I am going to study abroad, and I can find out more about what in happening in the U.K.

I like to read about the stars and see what is happening in their lives. The Kardashians are always in the news and I like to see what clothes they are wearing. I can also read about my favourite pop stars, Taylor Swift and Mylie Cyrus. Their lives seem so exciting and I can daydream about living that kind of lifestyle.

Daydream – (Noun) (c) – UK /ˈdeɪ.driːm/ US /ˈdeɪ.driːm/ – a series of pleasant thoughts about something you would prefer to be doing or something you would like to achieve in the future

Think about the following –

  1. What was the newspaper/magazine?
  2. Why did you choose that magazine/newspaper?

Answer

I try and read one magazine a month in a foreign language. I need to go to a bookstore to buy them though as they are not readily available in English in my country. I am interested in the natural world, so I buy National Geographic as there are lots of interesting articles and the photographs are inside are beautiful.

I don’t often read newspapers or magazines in English, but I do read books in English. I like to try some books by famous authors, at the moment I am reading Wuthering Height by Emily Bronte.  Although it was written a long time ago it is an interesting novel.

Author – (Noun) – (c) – UK  /ˈɔː.θər/ US  /ˈɑː.θɚ/ the writer of a book, article or play

I think most students that have done/do this would say that it is a good way to learn a foreign language.

Think about these questions –

  1. What are the benefits of reading a newspaper/magazine in a foreign language?
  2. How has reading a newspaper/magazine in a foreign language helped you?
  3. Would you recommend your friends read a newspaper/magazine in a foreign language to help them improve their language skills?

Answers

I prefer to read magazines in English, and I think my English has improved a lot since I started. I read magazines on the bus on the way to university and highlight any words I don’t know, then check them on my dictionary app on my phone. Even though the articles are not that academic I feel my vocabulary has increased which has helped with my spoken English.

One of my friends recommended I try doing this to improve my reading comprehension. I have been reading newspapers and magazines in English now for a couple of months and it has really helped. At first it took me a long time to read even one article, but my reading speed has increased a lot. Also, my vocabulary has improved a lot as I have learned so many new words.
