IELTS Writing task 1 | Flow chart: Manufacturing process
We categorise this as a flow chart but it is also a process. Flow charts look rather complicated but just follow the arrows.
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The diagrams show a structure that is used to generate electricity from wave power.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Diagrams A and B show how a wave powered generator functions to produce electricity by using the energy of waves.
The location of the power station is paramount for optimal working conditions. The generator is made up of a large column which is constructed on the side of a cliff or sea wall. The column is connected to a chamber at the bottom which extends into the sea, and a turbine is positioned in the centre of the column.
As can be seen from Diagram A, as waves enter the chamber, air is forced into the column and as a result the turbine rotates in a clockwise direction and electricity is produced. Diagram B shows that when the waves retreat from the chamber, air is sucked back down the column, the turbine rotating in the same direction and again electricity is produced.
Overall, it can be clearly seen from the two diagrams how the power of the waves is harnessed to produce electricity.

The introduction has been transformed and clearly introduces the object and what it is designed to do. The next paragraph introduces the component parts that make up the object and how they are connected together. These are important steps to follow when writing about a machine/object.
The final body paragraph describes clearly how the component parts function and electricity is produced. The overview is clear and you will notice that the overview has been written at the end. The reason for this is, if it were written second it would be very similar to the introduction. You must have an overview even when describing an object. Usually, we would advise students to write the overview second so that if the task 1 is not completed, it would still be possible to get a good score as it is an important criteria for rating.
The paragraphing is very clear and grammar is well controlled with use of the ‘Passive Voice’ which is essential to get a higher band score for this type of task.

Quite a standard writing task 1 process. What extra vocabulary could you add to this?. Don’t forget to use the passive voice for a 7.

This is an interesting IELTS task 1 process on distillation and may well safe your life if you were ever stranded on a desert island.
